Unreleased Gateway PC sighted at Acer-CyberPress LAN Party
January 28, 2009
Top brass computer manufacturer Acer Philippines recently invited members of the CyberPress, aka the IT Journalists Association of the Philippines, for a LAN party. The event was held exclusively for the IT group at the company’s service center in Paco, Manila and featured competitions for two games, Need for Speed Pro Street and Crysis.
In one corner sat the Acer Aspire G7700, aka the Predator (or as one CyberPress member hailed it, the monster Transformer). And at that moment, the monicker was apt as it appeared to be lurking in one corner of the room, its monitor and LEDs softly illuminating in the semi-darkness like some beast behind the jungle foliage waiting to pounce on its unsuspecting prey. It has burnt orange and black exteriors that heavily brings hardcore industrial design to mind, while its insides are wall-to-wall computing power with 4GB memory (up to 8GB supported), 640GB storage (1T max), NVidia nForce 780i SLI MCP and powered by Intel’s Core i7 processor. We kept on joking about having to genuflect every time we passed by it.
As for the non-gamers, they also laid out an array of systems with a handful of casual games and Internet access. On the left side of the room, lined several Gateway laptops; but what caught our attention was the Gateway ZX2033W in all its whiteness standing out of the pile of matte and glossy black and gray machines. It’s a desktop machine that uses a fairly small top real estate and carries a spec list netbooks nowadays have, including an AMD Athlon 2650e 940 1.6HGHz, a gigabyte of DDR2 memory, a 160GB SATA hard drive, multicard reader, Web cam and both wired Ethernet and Wi-Fi connectivity options, quite a polar opposite of the powerhouse that is the Predator. Not-so-netbook-esque, though, are its 18.5-inch WXGA LCD display, optical drive and of course its general form factor, which practically makes it an Asus EeeTop rival on the nettop space, minus the touchscreen capabilities.

The Gateway ZX2033W has yet to be released locally so no pricing information as of yet.

One down…
December 28, 2008
Just finished bloghopping the people on my buddy list.
And all I have to say, aside from the usual Merry Christmas and Happy New Year crap, is that my cynical friend’s no longer cynical.
His standard blog posts that shined brightly with existentialist ideas bathed in sullen tones have now been replaced by sappy lines proclaiming love engulfed by monogamy which, in my opinion, goes against the primary human objective of fucking as much as you can to spread your seed in a maladjusted worldwide orgy. Logically, though, the local population count sure as hell kicks this to the curb, so I guess it’s ok.
So this is what a girl can do to my kind.
Now don’t get me wrong; not that I’m not happy for the guy, but it sure looks like I’m gonna hafta be cynical by my lonesome from here on end. I feel like I’m Randal in the shittery watching Dante slowly drift away. Oooh…now that’s a thought, maybe I should get him some bestiality videos.
Meh.
Traipsing Around Bohol II
December 12, 2008
Right after breakfast on our second day, the PR company anounced the day’s activity: a series of challenges around Bohol ala Amazing Race. Having watched the first season of Amazing Race and a devoted follower of Amazing Race Asia, I was getting worried about how hard the challenges were gonna be and the lack of transportation. Thankfully, after dividing us into three teams, they assigned a van and a guide each. Unfortunately, this posed as a challenge for the cam whore in me; since we were running around most of the time and I took the adage “you’re only as fast as your slowest member” to heart, I couldn’t just stop in my tracks and shoot photos. Traipsing Around Bohol
December 8, 2008Like I mentioned here, HP and Intel Philippines flew me and a bunch of IT reporters over to Panglao, Bohol for their annual Synergy event. A couple of days prior to the flight, we were advised to be at the airport at around 6:00am for the 8:00am flight.
Naturally, since I live considerably far, I left the house at around 3:00am, to give myself three hours to get there which I calculated to include the time wasted walking out of our subdivision, waiting for a tricycle to get to the highway, flagging a jeepney to get to Crossing, getting on a cab for the airport and the hurrendous traffic I was sure I’d encounter. On Hold…
November 14, 2008In the middle of the mind-numbing work schedule I imposed on my self (that mostly included going to the office two or three hours before office hours and being the last one to leave my cube), I stopped everything I was doing to start packing my bags and troop to the airport for a three-day press junket. This time I head for Panglao, Bohol.
So naturally, my Manila life is put on hold while I run around the rural streets of Bohol and practically get drunk every night. An officematetold me I should enjoy the whole trip because I “deserve it.” I’m quoting him, in case you get the feeling that I’m pulling my own leg. Problem is, I can’t sincerely feel that I do. Maybe the fact that I have lots of unfinished things at the office bolsters the idea, aside from being a newbie in the company.
I’m writing this on my last night here, on a borrowed laptop at the resort’s dining area. Photos will be posted here as soon as I get home and some time.
Photoshop Disasters
November 1, 2008
Naturally, I come across a multitude of Photoshop byproducts on a daily basis, especially since I work in the print industry. But having been a user myself since high school, I also have this affliction of being able to immediately notice those horribly rendered works by some clueless graphic artist, perhaps e misspelling or two or maybe even pitiful attempts to enhance a photo to make the model look better or the shot appear awesome. These would often leave me laughing me lungs out until my sides hurt. The Photoshop Disaster blog shares these same sentiments, collecting horrid attempts at utilizing Photoshop and throws in a knee-slapping comment or two under each entry.
Here are a few samples. See if you can spot the obvious Photoshop fuck ups. (more…)
WTF? Feline Endurance
October 31, 2008
So here’s the scene.
A couple of months ago.
Me, sitting by the front porch, reading an old college magazine. My cat runs past, followed by my dad running at his top speed with a rock in hand. Dad catches up and along the sidewalk outside. Dad, with all the force he could muster, throws the rock at my cat. I look out. My cat is lying on the sidewalk not moving except for the heavy breathing. Mortified, pissed off and afraid I’d see my loving cat die, I march directly to my room. I slam the door. Mom says the cat stole one of the uncooked fishes being prepared for lunch.
I shower and head for the mall to keep my mind off everything that just happened. I do my best not to look at my cat on my way out.
A few weeks later.
Me, sitting by the front porch, earbud plugged to my ears, listening to a podcast. My cat casually walks by and purringly rubs itself on my leg.
Me: “What the fuck!? BUHAY KA PA PALA!?”

Local Bands in the New Video Game
October 29, 2008
I know someone who knows someone working in some recording studio. This friend of a friend told me a few months ago that he was working on a soundtrack for a very popular video game company. He was producing the soundtrack to their latest games and that it would feature two Filipino rock bands. Before I even started to fish foranswers (or at least clues), our common friend handed me a thumb drive containing the five tracks from those bands which I immediately plugged into my PC and transferred to my iPod.
The vocal work on the first four tracks was unmistakable. It was from a band (which I will not name to protect that friend of a friend) that I really liked and inconsistently followed during the late, late 90s. Despite the familiarity of the vocals, it was great to note that the vocalist didn’t do any of the vocal acrobatics and growls (there’s a hint for ya, a band from the hupaw days). Though accompanying music came with rocking fast tempo to match the game’s hypersped theme, it sounded lite with nary a riff of drop tuned goodness from their signature sound. And I was really digging them.
Unfortunately, I can’t really say the same for the last track done by the other local band which brought on their ho-hum-strained sound. To be honest I still can’t believe that this band even survived the 90s and the early 2000s. And I can see that they still haven’t learned how to write proper lyrics. The track sounded so fucked up I was cringing in my seat, my hand independently reaching for the STOP button. It was like watching some 50s slapstick comedy; painful, pitiful and annoying.
Meme: EW’s New Classics: Movies
September 24, 2008
So apparently Entertainment Weekly recently (and by ‘recently‘ I meant last July) came out with a list of the 100 New Movie Classics from tha last 25 years. Which ones have you seen?
I’ve seen 35 (bold) of them, which is pretty bad. Oh well, at least now I have a list of movies to catch.

Uncovered Animated GIFs
August 12, 2008
I recently discovered a CD containing some of my old files from our old dead PC. Most of the files were corrupted, but I did recover four articles and three animated GIFs. Their accompanying SWF and EXE files were among those corrupted so I guess I’d have to start from scratch if I want to recreate/edit them.
