It is widely believed that the human mind is vast and limitless.

Unfortunately, this is as far as mine goes.

Walk Slowly

November 30, 2007

It still saddens me that Wolfmann+ has decided to part ways but is comforting that they did stay together as long as they did despite Wilf's passing two years ago.  His second independent release, Diner, gave us great songs like "Baked Mushroom " and "Piniritong Dalagang Bukid" among others.  The follow up disc was a post mortem effort produced by his family and friends from unfinished cuts and clips found in his computer. it's a self-titled wonder that justifiably follows up the creative edge where Diner had left off.  Among the good songs in that album is "Walk Slowly" a slow track Wilf wrote when their original guitarist was migrating to the US.  Many, myself included, now dedicate that song to him.

Thanks to Whannie for uploading the video, which was originally shown during this month's Admit One anniversary/Wolfmann Birthday gig.  Click the Wolfmann icon to watch the video.

Quiz Dork II

Stumbled into this site.

Not that I actually believe in computer-generated quiz results about alternative beliefs, but it does sound logical at least based on my current state.

Your past life diagnosis:

I don't know how you feel about it, but you were male in your last earthly incarnation. You were born somewhere in the territory of modern Borneo around the year 1675. Your profession was that of a designer, engineer or craftsman.
Your brief psychological profile in your past life:
Seeker of truth and wisdom. You could have seen your future lives. Others perceived you as an idealist illuminating path to future.
The lesson that your last past life brought to your present incarnation:
Your lesson is to develop a kind attitude towards people, and to acquire the gift of understanding and compassion.
Do you remember now?

Eyng…?

Three days ago I was over at the Manila Peninsula for the the launch of LG's latest mobile phone.

Two days ago I was in that hotel's Presidential Suite for the launch of three new MP3 players and an LCDTV from Samsung.

And yesterday morning, I was just informed that the event I was to attend that afternoon was canceled when we found out that there was some sort of militant activity in Ayala headed by Sen Antonio Trillanes and cohorts.  So they're not commemorating the fourth anniversary of the Oakwood Mutiny, are they?  Anyway, this time its core was the Manila Pen and you can tell that this group really loves five-star hotels.  (Info here)

Somebody in the office turned a radio on to listen to the news, and they were shuffling as the events unfolded and new updates came in every now and then from field reporters at the scene.  All this happened while I was reading a copy of 1602 Clifford had brought.  I really can't say that I actually care.  I can't say that don't give a flying fuck what was happening, but as long as nobody gets killed and as long as the entire thing doesn't snowball into one behemoth of shit I'm not going get rattled by it.  I care more about the direction of the Pinoy rock scene than this.  I had lost interest in whatever political shit the country runs crashes onto.  So when did I start getting apolitical?  When Erap became president.  That's a deal breaker right there.

Anyway I decided to meet up with Donna to hang out at Robinson's Galleria.  During the first few hours of roaming the damn mall, she received a text message saying that there was gonna be a curfew in the Metro and anyone caught outdoors at midnight would be apprehended.

Oh nice, sure give us a feel of the good ole Martial Law days because that's exactly what I always jot down to answer "If you could go back in time, what would like to experience?" when I'm asked to answer slum notes back in grade school.

And apparently, Trillanes' group had brought tanks inside the hotel.  Now I pity the hotel owners, well not really.  Gunfires were also heard from the area with the shots coming from the government side of the fence.  This was around 3:00pm and round this same, Sen Jamby Madrigal was spotted at Powerplant Mall in Rockwell Center doing some last minute shopping, according to a text message Donna had received.

So around 9pm we went home and I was welcomed by an unseasonable traffic in Cubao at nearly 10:30.  I mean, those weren't streets, they were freaking parking lots.  I got home at 11:55.

Dork Central: Wetting My Pants

November 28, 2007

After a trip to Budjette's blog I found KADILIMAN: IN THEIR SILENT SHADOW CARVINAL

And I think I wet my pants a little.

It's a backstory spin-off of my favorite local ashcan Batch72.  Written by David Hontiveros and drawn by Edgar Tadeo, it tells the story of Doktor Kadiliman, a 1940s supervillian and grandfather to my fave pseudo goth grrl Kadi in his conquest and his legendary battle with the golden age Justice Corps.  It would certainly shed some light to the sketchy conversation/spat between Digmaan and Doktor Kadiliman in Batch72 #3 which is why I'm grabbing a copy.

It was sold (along with Hontiveros' PENUMBRA horror novellas and issues of Budjette's TRESE) during the recent 3rdKomikon.  And I'm currently choking myself for missing that event because I would've loved the shit on display, the artworks, the comic books and indie ashcans being sold as well as the Q&A session with Gilbert Monsanto and Pol Medina Jr.

I’m in???

I tagged along when they recorded the radio ad for the 10th Philippine Web Awards a few weeks ago.  The recording studio was somewhere in  Dian Street  in Makati and while our voice talent did the deed, the person in charge of the studio, Sir Choi,  told us that they were holding an audition for voice talents for a contest held by an animations network.  Doing some voice acting has always been a fascination as I've previously mentioned here and the idea of doing it professionally simply seemed like a good idea, though of course my current job remains my top priority.

To tell you the truth, I've never been confident with my own voice.  My friends may not believe it after all the call center praises I received in the past, my two passable-but-still-unworthy forays into radio, my one-time voice-over raket and the humor-hinged voice play I usually do.  I mean, I knew I did grow up with an near-clean neutral American accent from all the Sesame Street overdose during my toddler years, but still an accent is just an accent and says nothing about the actual voice quality.  Still, the opportunity was hard to let pass especially since I was already there and the only thing keeping me from finding out if I could qualify was walking into the recording booth and doing a recording.

I went for it.  And my jaw dropped upon looking at the script; I had to voice five different characters in a conversation, including one child and two adult females.  Oh shit.   So different intonations and accents, at possibly varying depths.

Right after the recording I stormed out of the studio practically annoyed with myself for even thinking that I could do it.  I kept on cussing at myself for even trying.  I told myself, "Well, now I need to scratch out another thing out of my 'Things To Do Before I Reach 30' list."  Not that I actually had a list, mind you, but it's nice to have tried or accomplished so much before I settle down.  That way, I'd have a lot of things to tell my future grandkids.  So anyway, I completely forgot about the whole thing because I got so tightly wrapped up in my job, which is why I got the surprise of my life when I received this text message an hour ago:

Congratulations!!

Ikaw ay nkpasa s ___ ___ ___.

pls come tomorrow @ 9am at the ___ ___ offices.

Thank you.

I find that there's absolutely no  explanation I can possibly find to slap onto what just happened.

Not that  I have my hopes up, but come on, I got in.  I'll just go with the flow and do my best and since I won't expect anything out of it, I know rejection won't scald me down my back.  And besides, if I pass this elimination, the victory's gonna be a hell lot sweeter!  So wish me luck!

Finally over

November 25, 2007

After months of serious work, the 10th Philippine Web Awards is finally over.  I can't believe it's finally over and that I can finally concentrate on my job.  Kudos to all my officemates for a job well done, especially those who had to put up with my stupidities particularly Ms Ams, Julls and Verns, and a special thanks to those who became my punching bags during sketchy moments Augy, Billy, Cielo, Doris, Erick, Leah and Shai.  The stress-ridden months would've been a heck less bearable without you all.

I think I'm in love.  So fucken lovely!  Here's a pic of me with Jelli Mateo who hosted the event with Donita.  I rarely have pictures taken with celebrities, but I'm making an exception here.

Me and my office buddies Augy, Shai and Cielo at the backstage

The MediaG8way Crew with Join the Club. Julls, Pao, Congie, Shai, Leah, Me, Cielo, Verns, Biboy and Migs.  Me and some of my officemates trooped over to the backstage to have pictures taken with the band (JTC of course, I'm not interested with the Brass Munkeys).  I told Biboy that I'm part of the their mailing list and he noticed my Admit One shirt.  I also mentioned to the entire band that I was at the album launch and even wrote an article about it along with a review of their album for a small magazine years ago.  Biboy says he remembered reading about it and gave me a hug which ended up with him giving me a smack down my jawline which made me exclaim "WHAT THE FUCK???" a little too loud.  At this point I was wearing the dammit-dude-that-was-totally-unnecessary-and-uncalled-for look so Shai and Leah had to assure me that "Na-taken away lang yon."

I forgot about the entire thing after a few bottles of beer at the after party.

Busy ass

I've been so freaking busy these past few days that I've been neglecting some of the things I enjoy doing.  I rarely get to watch TV and the last movie I saw was Stardust though I've promised myself that I'd watch Beowulf (yep, still haven't seen it) without resorting to Tower-Recto.  I haven't been able to post anything new here and my past week has been a monotonous blur that involved listening to the DV podcasts and MP3s on the way to work and then dozing off in the FX because I didn't get much sleep the night before, spending nine or more hours at the office and then traveling back home with my earbuds plugged in as I slowly fall asleep on the FX.  For months I've been doing double duty with my regular magazine duties and the 10th Philippine Web Awards.

Oh and I also did some radio interviews as I plugged our huge event on the two radio stations I used to listen to when I still had the luxury of owning a radio-enabled gadget.  They were nerve-wracking 5-10-minute Q&A sessions with the DJs and I was almost cracking up between questions because I was thinking "OH shit…radio idol once again" but then I just went with the flow.

Also, I've started reading the Heroes graphic novels and is seriously thinking about creating a new character and mapping out an entire story around him.  By the way, I created a gun-toting teenager a few years ago which I named Ian Montez (originally Montemayor) for a storyline that I had abandoned entirely and of course, being the meticulous, detail-oriented person that I am, I had very specific descriptions as to how he looks like; the height, build, hair, complete facial features and the way he talks.  Last Thursday, while I was on a line waiting to board an FX to get home, some guy queued up behind me and I swear he fucken looks exactly like my character the way I imagined him, except perhaps the lack of both the tattoo and the eye brow piercing.  It was so surreal.  Now I think I should bring that character back…

To those I lost…

November 20, 2007

Tonight I grieve.  I shed tears and pray to the heavens. To those I lost.

I will never attempt to write a proper memorial for you.  I feel that I have neither the strength nor the willingness to do so.

I regret not having spent enough time with you.  I regret not being there as often as I could.  I regret all the wrong words I said to you and  the mistakes I've committed.  It's sad that all I can offer you are my regrets.  And it's sad that I don't want to face the fact that you're no longer with us. I always fool myself into thinking that you just went on a trip somewhere and that we'd see each other again soon–something you would tell a child.

I told myself years ago that I would gladly sacrifice everything I have and all that I am against anything that would do you harm and it pains me heavily that there was absolutely nothing I could've done to save you, that what took you away from us all was something that could never be fought physically.  My heart goes out to you.  I love you and I miss you very much.

More than any word can possibly express.

King for A Day

November 18, 2007

After my radio interview I hung out for a while at the park thingie right in front of the Strata 2000 building. I had my earbuds on and was listening to MP3s.  I had the playlist shuffled.  Then on a parkbench a few feet away sat three drag queens wearing the skimpiest shit their slightly muscular bodies could fit.  Then as they sat down Green Day began playing "King for a Day" which I find seriously funny and so apt with what they do.

King For A Day (Green Day)

KING FOR A DAY
GREEN DAY

Started at the age of four
My mother went to the grocery store
Went sneaking through her bedroom door
To find something in a size 4

Sugar and spice and everything nice
Wasn't made for only girls
G.I. Joe in panty hose
Is making way for the one and only

King for a day
Princess by dawn
King for a day
In a leather thong
King for a day
Princess by dawn
Just wait till all the guys get a load of me

My daddy threw me in therapy
He thinks I'm not a real man
Who put the drag in the drag queen
Don't knock it until you tried it

Sugar and spice and everything nice
Wasn't made for only girls
G.I. Joe in pantyhose
Is making way for the one and only

King for a day
Princess by dawn
King for a day
In a leather thong
King for a day
Princess by dawn
Just wait till all the guys get a load of me

Zeroes? WTF?

I’ve finally finished season three of Lost and have started watching Heroes’ second season and I don’t know when I’d have the time continue watching.  That’s how much of a loser I am.  So for the meantime, here's MadTV's Heroes and Lost parodies.

And now it's time for some completely idiotic webisodes of the Heroes spoof Zeroes. It's severely stupid and I keep on wondering why anyone would invest their time and resources in making them.  Or watching them.  Though there were some snippets of wit injected every now and then, the webisodes are just not funny.  But their efforts are appreciated.

Thanks to Grandmaster Budjette for uploading this on YouTube.

Too bad one of my favorite Pugad Baboy characters, Ka Noli, was absent, although his biik Joma was there.  So it was kinda weird seeing Tomas without Ka Noli.  But it's all good.

Tulad ng Dati

I saw "Tulad ng Dati" starring The Dawn over the local cable channel PBO.

Loser, right?  Yeah I know, it's from last year's Cinemalaya but I only got to see last Sunday.

It's a movie about a band from an era that I was too young to recall but reappeared in the mainstream consciousness during my college days.  But I did grow up to their music and watching my sisters and their friends making scrap books and concert/gig tickets hanging around their cabinets as well as newspaper cutouts and posters while their music blared in the living room stereo.  So I knew their song as much as I knew Tears For Fears and The Cure and A-Ha because I was born at the start of the era and could remember as far as when New Wave was coming to a close.  I was around five years old back then.  I knew their songs even before I could multiply or construct intelligent sentences.

In fact I remember when my mom was chopping veggies for our dinner as she watched Eye to Eye when it was reported that Teddy Diaz, The Dawn's  guitarist and back up vocalist had died.  It flooded news programs for weeks and come Halloween that year my sisters lit a candle just for him in our front yard.

But The Dawn did it for me.  My first taste of Filipino alternative music; who knew that up until now I'd still be observing to and listening the Filipino alternative scene?  The came the Eraserheads, Rivermaya, Parokya ni Edgar; then I jumped off to Greyhoundz, Cheese (consequently, of course, Queso), Sandwich, Sky Church and then over to Twisted Halo, Sugarfree and Imago.

The film follows the band's history, from the first lineup, to  Teddy's death , to the band reorganizing themselves and the several lineup changes.   And all throughout this lifetime, vocalist Jett Pangan dealt with the lose of Teddy.  My favorite part was the dream sequence where Jett comes face to face with Teddy years after his death (played by Ping Medina, Pen Medina's kid who did a great job of acting creepily looking a hell lot like Teddy himself):

Ano ang ginagawa sa mga bagay na nawawala?

Hinahanap

Ano ang ginagawa pag hindi mo mahanap?

Pinapalitan

Ano ang ginagawa kapag hindi mo mapalitan?

Kinakalimutan

Ito ngayon ang tanong, ano ang ginagawa sa mga bagay na nawawala na hindi mo mahanap, hindi mo mapalitan at hindi makalimutan?

TINATANGGAP
