It is widely believed that the human mind is vast and limitless.

Unfortunately, this is as far as mine goes.

Local Bands in the New Video Game

This friend of a friend told me a few months ago that he was working on a soundtrack for a very popular video game company. He was producing the soundtrack to their latest games and that it would feature two Filipino rock bands. Before I even started to fish foranswers (or at least clues), our common friend handed me a thumb drive containing the five tracks from those bands which I immediately plugged into my PC and transferred to my iPod.

The vocal work on the first four tracks was unmistakable. It was from a band (which I will not name to protect that friend of a friend) that I really liked and inconsistently followed during the late, late 90s. Despite the familiarity of the vocals, it was great to note that the vocalist didn’t do any of the vocal acrobatics and growls (there’s a hint for ya, a band from the hupaw days). Though accompanying music came with rocking fast tempo to match the game’s hypersped theme, it sounded lite with nary a riff of drop tuned goodness from their signature sound. And I was really digging them.

Unfortunately, I can’t really say the same for the last track done by the other local band which brought on their ho-hum-strained sound. To be honest I still can’t believe that this band even survived the 90s and the early 2000s. And I can see that they still haven’t learned how to write proper lyrics. The track sounded so fucked up I was cringing in my seat, my hand independently reaching for the STOP button. It was like watching some 50s slapstick comedy; painful, pitiful and annoying.
